About Charlotte Merz
Australian-American mezzo soprano, Charlotte Merz, is establishing herself as a multifaceted and versatile performer of opera and concert repertoire.
Ms. Merz made her Sydney Opera House debut in 2015 as a featured soloist in Bernstein's Mass. Additional performance credits in Australia include the Countess of Desmond (English Eccentrics), Jo March* (Little Women) and Giraffier (Les Deux Aveugles). Charlotte has performed in concert with the Sydney Philharmonia, Penrith Symphony Orchestra, and Sydney Collegium Musicum Choir and Orchestra. In 2016 Ms. Merz was named a Young Artist with Pacific Opera, Sydney.
In the United States, Charlotte has performed the roles of Dorabella (Cosi Fan Tutte), Miss Jessel (The Turn of the Screw), Violet (A Childhood Miracle), Zweiter Knabe (Die Zauberflöte), Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier), Sesto (La Clemenza di Tito), Angelina (La Cenerentola) and Mercedes (Carmen). Upon graduation from the Manhattan School of Music Charlotte was accepted as a Young Artist with Sarasota Opera, Florida. Additionally, she has appeared as a Festival Artist with Chautauqua Opera Company and was named as an Emerging Artist with Bel Canto, Tuscany.
Ms. Merz is the recipient of a number of awards and grants including the Helpmann Family Fellowship, Australian Elizabeth Theatre Trust, Clare Martin Bequest, Albert Scholarship for Music and the Performer's Trust Foundation.
Ms. Merz currently divides her time between Sydney, Australia and New York City, USA.
Teaching and Academic Research
Academic Research Focus: The Zwischenfach Voice
Ms. Merz is a doctoral candidate at the Manhattan School of Music, New York. Her research focus area is the Zwischenfach voice type.
In addition to holding degrees from both the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Manhattan School of Music, Ms. Merz holds a Teaching Fellowship position in the music department at Columbia University, New York. Ms. Merz has been recognized as a Doctoral Fellow in the Center for Career Readiness and Community Impact at the Manhattan School of Music, showcasing her multifaceted approach to her musical and academic career.
In addition to research, Ms. Merz maintains a studio of private voice students. Her students have been accepted into vocal arts programs at a number of prestigious universities in the USA including; New York University, American University, Temple University, Vassar College, Barnard College, Columbia University and University of California, Los Angeles.
